I don't think the looks had anything to do with it and the Bush was not very well liked for his underhanded attack on Reagan during the debates.

I was no fan of George HW Bush and his "voodoo economics" attacks on Reagan. In fact, I rather enjoyed it when he couldn't be located at the convention for the VP slot and was eventually found in a bar. With the bar set so low, Jeb still doesn't reach.
