Based on witness accounts, investigators believed the teen — allegedly a documented member of a local street gang — was handling a loaded firearm when he “unintentionally” shot himself, the release stated.

It remained unclear how he obtained the handgun.

As part of the ongoing investigation, detectives said they were still looking to speak with additional people who were at the location when the shooting occurred.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500

Based on witness accounts...

Were those witnesses perhaps somehow involved with this accidental shooting? Was it accidental?

This was a case of LA roulette where unlike Russian roulette they use a semi-auto handgun instead of a revolver.

Probably didn’t have an ‘at home’ father to teaching him those things a father is suppose to teach his son, including handling weapons and staying out of gangs.

"a documented member of a local street gang"

"It remained unclear how he obtained the handgun."

I'm not a detective but I think the first quote answers the question.

As someone who was born in East LA (Monterey Park) and lived in Rosemead until I was 6, it was depressing to see Rosemead now listed as one of the worst 20 places to live in the US.

Back then, it was a working class post-war neighborhood where people knew each other, left their houses and cars unlocked, and crime was rare.

Today, it’s gang infested, graffiti laden, and people hide in their homes sporting bars on the doors and windows.

My, what progress we’ve made in 50 years...

It’s a good thing Cali has such strict gun laws, otherwise I’d worry that guns were readily available to gang members.

I assume the firearm was found with the stiff. The article didn't say.

That street gang must be a little light on basic training.

My basic was Navy boot camp and a little training aboard a destroyer. My only training was with a .22 bolt action, an M1 Garand and a Browning 1911 .45. My Dad also showed me what to do with firearms.

No one, not a soul, responsible for teaching me ever suggested I point a loaded firearm...or unloaded...at my head.

“It remained unclear how he obtained the handgun.”

I’m sure the young man... being an upstanding citizen in his community passed an extensive background check, which is required for a person to be in possession of a firearm .
