Remember Morgan’s wife attempted to turn the doorknob and walkers threw concrete into the glass and the department store. They also climb steps to the top of the roof. I guess ladders are still safe
Another possibility may be that some memories linger in the first hours or days after death before fading, hence a newly dead child picking up the stuffed animal out of habit, like Morgan’s wife returning home again and again or Sophia seeming to recognize the others.
