We would gain a end to the conflict that never ends. But wars are costly for both sides. I assure you that we will not start it, but Russia keeps pushing. The more people here say things as you do, the harder he is going to push.
Yes, Obama is weak and that weakness is being exploited, just as Putin exploited Bush’s attempts to reset the relationship.
Any sign of weakness to a Russian is a invitation to exploit it.

Russia is not in Syria to deal a blow it ISIS. They are allied with Iran and Iran sees ISIS as a useful issue they can easily exploit and they are doing so as we speak in Iraq.
It would not surprise me at all if it were discovered that a Iranian linked group was funneling aid and information to ISIS.
What Russia is really there for is to run interference between Obama’s meager attempts to arm and train opposition groups to Assad.
Initially they even attacked the Kurds..
They are doing everything they can get away with and nobody wants to piss them off, and they know it..
So as long as you present a weak side to Russia, you will never have a war with them, just the threat but they will eventually have you in a checkmate situation. And all due to your weakness.
