Word For The Day, Tuesday November 17, 2015
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
Panglossian [pan-glos-ee-uh n, -glaw-see-, pang-]
-adj
characterized by or given to extreme optimism, especially in the face of unrelieved hardship or adversity.
[1825-35; after Pangloss, an optimistic character in Voltaire's Candide; compare Greek panglossÃa garrulousness, wordiness (see pan-, glosso-, -y3); see -ian]
Instead of describing War Room as “a little Pollyanna-ish”, I guess I could have said Panglossian.
saw that yesterday, how sick.
yes, it looks like it’s on the way out of theaters actually. It’s still around but a bit farflung.
Comes out on DVD before Christmas.
Speaking of the limited (and strange) vocabulary of the let...
I attended a dinner last night sponsored by The Fund for American Studies with Fred Barnes as the featured speaker. He was there to tout and sell his new book (written with Mort Kondracke) “Jack Kemp, the Bleeding-Heart Conservative Who Changed America”.
Barnes was funny and his talk was follwed by a free-flowing Q & A. I asked where this new term for ISIS had come from that I’ve heard both Kerry and Obama use in the last week, or so — Dash. Barnes said that it seems to be some bawlderization of the term the Arabs used. As to why this has suddenly appeared in our vernacular, he gave some lame excuse for obama and then brought the house down when he said the “Kerry is too stupid to know why he’s using it.” LOLOLOL
The dinner was free and was unbelievable. Sea Bass floating in butter followed by a heavenly chocolate cake swimming in a warm sugar sauce. Of course I bought a book, and I can’t wait to start it.
My husband is in MO right now hunting deer, so I went with a widow friend of mine. She was driving and took us to the wrong private club in downtown Milwaukee. (I told her she was at the wrong club, but she was very sure.) The Parking Valets welcomed us with open arms to “The President’s Dinner with Peggy Noonan”. That was black tie, and they stopped us at the door. LOL.
Quite an adventure!
I totally blew my diet last night, but it was worth it. I’ll just be extra careful for the next week. I can’t believe that this dinner was free to about 90 people. Free before dinner drinks (I abstained), wine with dinner, a staff of about 10 waiters to serve 85 people, etc. It couldn’t have been nicer. Somebody in my book cllub was on the organizing committee and she invited the whole book club and their husbands, although most of them are widowed.
Sounds like a lovely evening.
...and you dodged a bullet missing Noonan.
I do believe that is his full last name - Peter Panglossian
Obama is not interested in winning.
I can’t wait for the next president to tell him “he’s fired” and then America can start winning again.
clever! quite a panglossian sentiment ; )
When I heard Obama say it, I thought dang that’s another 3 points in the polls for Trump.
time will tell. I would have NO idea where to put $ were I betting on the election. world events, Trumps own remarks, lots of different variables that will tell the tale.
The only thing I know is that I know nothing.
Well that and I will not vote for Jeb! under any circumstance.
I just don’t see him getting the nomination.
Bill: [reading from their history textbook] “The only true wisdom consists in knowing that you know nothing.”
Ted: [gasps] That’s us, dude!
Bill: Yeah!
At prayer group this morning the little old ladies started trashing Obama and his lack of ability to defend us. These prayer warriors have him pegged and they don’t like him. If he lost little old church ladies, he’s toast.
How did they support him in first place? Do they think Hillary will keep us safe?
I don’t know that they did. We are quite Rep in these parts.
Definitely not a Panglossian view of things:

Is this what they mean by “Je suis Charlie?”
