Can 'The Force Awakens' become the biggest movie ever?
Fox news ^ | Published November 21, 2015

Riding galaxy-sized expectations, the new "Star Wars" movie is already setting records for pre-opening ticket sales, with still a month to go. But does that mean the movie's destined to be the biggest of all time?

Though several signs point in that direction, the outcome isn't guaranteed.

The movie is on track to have the biggest December opening ever, topping "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," which took in $85 million in the U.S. and Canada on its opening weekend in December 2012.

Over the past 24 months the number of successful movies released you can count on one hand. A new foo foo Cineapolis theater opened up nearby and is struggling as there is nuthin to offer those willing to cough up $50/couple.

So anything that is released with ANY sense of adventure or fun will be a blockbuster. Hopefully this new SW film will be good - I miss the "movies".

I’m not paying to see it. The previews show you everything. Feel like I’ve already seen it.

I watched the first Star Wars 28 times - in the theater - when it came out. It played at the same theater for months if not over a year.

I’ll wait until this one comes out on Blue Ray.

The day of a movie being that big is long gone. Actors are not the “gods” they were in the 1930’s. Musicians are not the “gods” they were in the 60’s and 70’s. Movies are not the top of the entertainment heap that they once were either.

But it should be a good watch.

I sold big screen TV’s in the early 80’s. I remember people paying at least $2,500 1981 dollars for a 50”, curved and blurry big screen experience. We did have good stuff on laserdisk, but even it could not compete with an upscaled dvd, nor could those TV’s come close.

However, a good 50+ inch flat screen today and a good surround system cost a fraction (in 2015 dollars) of what that old system did, and it SURPASSES the theater experience. And there is no parking and traffic hassle.

We wanted to see Pixels. It cost $1.50 on blueray at Redbox, right next to one of the best take-out pizza places around here. And I already had the beer. Why would we go to a theater?

That’s true of all the big releases now. Previews, endless scenes posted on the internet... the idea that less is more is lost. Rather than tease interest they beat it to death.

JJ Abrams involvement means that it will be flashy action with no real meat and ultimately really stupid and juvenile. Like his Star Trek reboot.

I just hope they hired Danny Elfman to do the music this time. Gosh, he's so good. /s

Good points and I do recall those early projection wide screans. But one thing we are all going to miss is the experience of being in a movie theater reacting to the film. When something is very funny the collective laughter in the theater adds to the moment. Screams gasps and other shock noises from others also seems to add to the experience.

The Exorcist benefited from many people in the theater moaning or gasping in terror as bad stuff happened in the film. A complete stranger sitting next to me grabbed and held onto my arm for over 5 minutes - she apologized and then thanked me for not yanking it away.

Nowadays with kids glued to their glowing phones and talking during the movie that collective benefit is gone.

However, I do expression concern that J. J. Abrams' politics (he's a known Hillary Clinton supporter) could end up in the plot line of The Force Awakens. And not a peep from the Walt Disney Company over such concerns.

Remember how Seth Rogen's tweet against Presidential candidate Ben Carson did enormous damage to the success of Steve Jobs and Quentin Tarantino may be facing the same fate by hurting the chances of Hateful Eight?

I was in Dubai a year ago and made a trip to the Mall of Dubai,an *amazing* place where one sees nothing but Ferraris,Bugatis,Bentleys and Rolls Royces in the valet parking area...many of which sport Saudi plates. In one of the electronics stores in the mall there was a Samsung 105 inch UHD set priced at 500,000 dirhams...which is about $150,000 (US).

Mind you,it was a *very* nice set and came with a free tablet, ;-)

What, and miss out on sitting in front of parents who couldn't bother to shell out for a baby sitter so they bring the screaming little brat into the theater with them? Or the teenagers who sit in front of you texting all during the movie, shining their little screens distracting you from the big one?

You nailed the one part I miss. And that it isn’t there any more.

Once the theater lost the one advantage it still had, it became dead to me.

Do you remember “The Jerk”? The guys in the car suddenly realizing, “do you want to wait around for an oven mitt?” My wife and I notice a LOT of western culture is “waiting around for an oven mitt.” We choose to spend our time (and money) in other ways.

Yeah maybe they can recycle this music for the opening credits?
