I enjoy watching those old planes at airshows. The Confederate Air Force supplies a lot of them.
The one that really gets to me was the P38 dug out from very deep vertical ice tunnels in Greenland i think, brought out piece by piece from guns to wings.
Robert Atkins tried to be a pilot but they fired him because he kept removing the carbs.
Amazing what you can do with a lot of time, a lot of helpers, and a lot of money!
Speaking of “Missing planes” ...
I read a story here on FR last year, maybe the year before, about a planned dig in Southeast Asia for some lost Spitfires.
Apparently a British outpost had just received a shipment of some 80 BRAND NEW Spits during the war. But the base (in Burma, was it?) was about to be overrun by the Japanese so they buried the crates to keep the planes out of enemy hands.
The location of the burial was lost until recently, when a local remembered the location The backers of the project were hopeful that at least sme of the Spits would be in good enough shape to rebuild.
Then the story disappeared. I’ve been watching for it, but nothing.
Anybody know if those Spitfires were found?
