Since the end of World War 2 we have suffered from the delusion that any “war” we fight will be a “clean” conflict where only the bare minimum of bad people get hurt and we liberate a grateful people from evil oppressive regimes.

The sooner we disabuse ourselves of this silly notion the better.

I think that started with thei idea of "daylight precision bombing". I'm sure our guys did their very best to hit military targets, but like the Islamists, the Nazis had their targets and neighborhoods up against each other.

Then, though, we had the resolve to do what was necessary, and the clarity to recognize that the factory worker was as much a part of the war effort as the fighter pilot.
