I’ve got the Model 48 but if your looking for quiet it’s certainly not. Scoped it will shoot sub half inch groups at 25 yards. It also has an excellent trigger.
I recently went through this. I’m too am a hunter and am well-heeled for the field. And I have handguns. Never got into black rifle thing, but gradually some of my hunting buddies bought AR’s, so I was able to shoot them and get a little familiarity with that class of weapon. After listening to liberal anti-gun rhetoric and watching the gradual destabilization of our country, I decided if I didn’t get one I might one day regret it.
After deciding to get an AR, the problem was knowing where to start. At one point I considered building an AR, but was quickly overwhelmed by the sheer number of options out there. I moved on to the idea of simply walking into the gun shop and getting what I wanted. I set a budget of $2,500 for a rifle and accessories. I talked to dealers at gun shows and I went to a number of local stores.
In the end a friend in a local gun shop convinced me to simply get one that I could rely on and he suggested I consider either the S&W M&P Sport 15 or Ruger AR-556. After studying things for a while I settled on the Ruger. Hickok45’s video convinced me. I’ve had it several months and it is terrific. There are rifles with smoother features, but it is perfect for what I wanted it for, which is mostly for potential social work in an emergency. And it only ran $550 out-the-door.

Most of the lower level AR’s have pretty much junk triggers but that’s easily remedied with after market drop in’s. The oracle with a 2 stage RR came in under 600 less tax.
Mine rides with me daily on the ranch. Coyotes and feral hogs are on the shoot on sight list an it’s take a fair share. While I would never recommend the 223 for deer hunting it claims the life of thousands every year. Move up to the 60 plus grain bullets and make precise shoots, such as neck shot’s.
Would you like some cheese to go with that wine?
Maybe this evening as I don’t drink in the morning like you and some others here.
Still not funny and extremely cowardly.
Seems to fit you nicely.
Gunner...what did I tell you about following me??
lol
Yeah. Purcell Guns, right on Main Street.
Your answer is:
The ar15 is a medium speed 22 which is optimized for accuracy. Little recoil and very light weight make it very pleasant to shoot particularly for younger and older shooters.
It is frequently used for hunting vermin from prairie dogs to hogs and it does a good job putting them away.
It is a good light sporting rifle and is popular for all of the above reasons.
There’s a Guns and Ammo edition out right now that actually covers the AR15 in depth. Going over all the calibers, trigger options, optics, barrels, etc.
Pretty good for a comparison minded neophyte.
The forward assist isn’t required as far as standard operation but allows for pushing it into battery if a round fails to seat. Some uppers shave it off to reduce weight. If you’re using it for hunting, all you need to do is cycle the next round in if it’s a one-off issue. Dust covers aren’t needed either but can keep dirt from getting into the action.
For 6.5 or higher you have 6.8spc, 300blk, 7.62x39, 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x40 (Wilson), 450 Bushmaster, 50 Beowulf, and 458 Socom.
The milspec trigger may get you 1 inch moa but the hammer is top heavy and when firing will give enough wobble to cause fits for some folks. A quality tuned trigger can help greatly with accuracy.
Also, an adjustable gas block and buffer set-up will affect recoil and follow up shots tremendously. By fine tuning to the ammo you’re shooting you can do fast accurate follow ups.
Right now AR prices are lower than they have ever been.

One last point is that the ar15 is used on vermin for which there are no hunting seasons and you can hunt every day of the year if you wish.
Smith & Wesson M&P Sport is a good starter rifle within your budget. Delton and DPMS also makes budget rifles, but may not have the quality or customer service of S&W.
Get a good quality upper like a BCM, and add an aftermarket trigger like a Gisselle and a 1.5-6x scope. 1 in groups shouldn’t be a problem with good handloads.
Wyndham makes a great AR15 for about $900.00 Mr. GG2 sold his Bushmaster and got one.
S&W has a new AR M&P15 Sport out for $599.00. .223/5.56 Very lightweight and getting great reviews. It does not have a forward assist or a dustcover but unless you are going into combat in Iraq or whatever it does not seem to be a problem.
Watch the Youtube videos where they put it through the paces running through a pond and crawling through the dirt. Never seems to jam. I have looked at it in my local gunshop a couple of times and I’m thinking of picking one up since the price is so good.
Very good advice. If I go with an AR15 the S&W will probably be the choice since I already have a S&W MP 15-22. Since I handload a lot and already have a .308< I find an AR10 intriging and practical. I think one will cost a few hundred more, but should be more versatile. Thanks everybody. This is what Freepers are good at. I pray I will never have to aim a firearm in malice toward another human being, but with civilization crashing down around us, I never know. Democrats are either clueless or evil and most Repubs care more about the polls than rightness or wrongness.
You will be fine with almost any current production AR. Most are at least “Mil-Spec” and won’t let you down. My only advice is to remember that magazines are a consumable, you can’t have too many. Once you find the rifle you want, divert all additional funds to magazines, ammo and support pieces. Support pieces include additional gas rings, firing pin, springs, etc.. Good luck
“possibly deerhunting. “
The 223 doesn’t provide the required energy for deer hunting by law. So, while getting an AR15 is a good thing, just don’t rely on it for legal hunting.
Didn’t know that, Thank you for your response....much appreciated.
