Procol Harum (/ËproÊkÉl ËhÉËrÉm/) are an English rock band formed in 1967. They contributed to the development of progressive rock, and by extension, symphonic rock. Their best-known recording is their 1967 hit single "A Whiter Shade of Pale", which is considered a classic of popular music and is one of the few singles to have sold over 10 million copies.[1] Although noted for its baroque and classical influence, Procol Harum's music also embraces the blues, R&B and soul.
In October 2012, the band was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[2]

For anyone not familiar with the band, their two best known songs are Whiter Shade of Pale and Conquistador.
Here is a great live version of Whiter Shade of Pale from just several years ago:

Also, a member of the band from 1967-1971 was Robin Trower. Trower went on to form his own group. Here is, by far, in many people’s opinion, their best work:

The live version of “Conquistador” is in my top 20 all time favorite songs..
Well, you learn something new everyday. I never knew Robin Trower was in Procul Harem..
I didn’t either until some knowledgeable friends of mine mentioned it about a year ago while I was playing some Trower on my portable boombox.
I agree. Bringing in a full orchestra (Edmonton Symphony) was epic.
My first rock concert.
Sometime in 69...
I was never a big PH fan but Conquistador is a GREAT song - especially live.
There’s an absolutely amazing live, outdoor version in Denmark with orchestra - sadly no longer available.
“Salty Dog” from that Danish concert I mentioned before...

The version I have is from ‘73 and is with the Edmonton Philharmonic. It’s a real fun song to play on guitar, too, which is surprisingly a very similar chord progression to “You’ll be a woman soon”, by Neil Diamond..
In the song, the conquistador is killed on a beach. Perhaps he was fighting French pirates at Havana in the 1570's or Dutch privateers at Acapulco in 1624.
