I’ve spent a Christmas with a couple fellows you may know, Mr. Daniels and Mr. Beam. I was temp duty in Norfolk and knew no one.

Will celebrate Christmas tomorrow at parents...

Went out today with a worker and we looked and found three Eastern Screech Owls that I had banded several years ago. They are in really good condition, and it was good to see they survived the very cold weather last year. It was a great Christmas present to encounter this splendid birds again.

I was thinking about you last night and today. Hope you are doing OK. Things will change, you will see.

You made me think of that line “No thrush may sing a new moon in if all screech owls have not heard his voice.” The screech owls should picket, but where? Cummings is gone.

Thanks for mentioning this! I do think that in these parts the Hatch Year and Second Year screechers took a heavy hit due to the very cold and snowy late winter. I’m surprised at how few I hear at night around my house. And checking some boxes further east of my location - nothing but cob-webs where in previous years there would be screech owls winter roosting.

There was an owl right near me when some genius decided it would keep away the rats in the park. I used to hear it late at night, very spooky to a city girl. Not a screech owl, though, or at least it didn’t sound like one.
