UK town wants to charge senior citizens $40 for a hand back up after they fall

British senior citizens who need helped back up after falling could be charged by local authorities.

Tendring District Council in Essex, England, is planning to introduce an extra $40 charge as part of its Careline service for elderly people who require home care.

But elderly rights campaigners have described the charge as "shocking" and equivalent to a falling fine, Mirror Online reported.

"People are being fined for falling," said Michael Le Cornu, chairman of Tendring Pensioners' Action group.

"The simple fact is, you are getting penalized for falling and these people are the most vulnerable in our society. How is that right in this day and age? This sort of thing shouldn't be happening in the 21st Century."

The annual charge will cover a carer attending an address to help elderly residents up after a fall.

Local politician Ivan Henderson, from the Labour Party, said it was "immoral" to introduce the extra charge.

"These people will have no other option but to pay because if they don't, they're going to be lying there on the floor, aren't they?" he added.

A Tendring District Council spokesman said the extra charge is required to pay for one member of staff to provide round-the-clock cover and one vehicle.

If the new policy is approved, it will take effect in April.

This is so outrageous and cruel, to charge the elderly for a simple kindness. They are surely the group of people who can least afford this disgusting $40 charge. You would think ISIS had thought this up. Next step, Soylent Green?

They’ll welcome Muslim murderers by the thousands and pay for their welfare for decades though.

wouldn’t it be great if the citizens banded together, formed their own armed civil police force, and began forcing city officials to pay all kinds of draconian taxes?

According to Chief Justice Roberts, this is not a fine, it is a tax.

Looking forward to the web images of horizontal bureaucrats with duct-taped ankles.

The council members behind this should be horsewhipped.

On the other hand, I had a suspected stroke a few weeks ago and ended up in hospital. Fortunately, it turned out to be a simple partial seizure. Had a range of tests including a CT Scan, ECG, blood etc in order to determine that, and ended up staying in hospital for two days... And I didn’t get a 5 figure medical bill for the privilege either, nor will I have to pay extra insurance for having the audacity to be taken to hospital.

This charge is outrageous, but I don’t think it will stand and they will be forced to make a uturn shortly.

For many of the elderly, a ride in the ambulance and a trip to the hospital is an opportunity to socialize and be the center of attention. And they’re not paying for it, we are. My grandmother was like this, and she wasn’t the only one in the complex who did it. No idea why, between kids, grandkids, and great grands, there was no lack for socializing, but I digress.

It’s a tough decision to make, but I can understand it. Do you let ‘the nice young man from the service’ come out for free several times a week? Or do you charge so that he only is called when necessary?

Just wait till the politicians decide that the fine for the excess liberation of CO2 and methane gases during said fall shall be $100.00

Yeah, but it looks like you have to pay the 40 quid annually to subscribe to the service, then you can call as often as you like. So maybe it’s a good entertainment bargain!

England has gone down the tubes. Aren’t the caregivers already being paid to help their clients? Are they going to be charge for each spoonful of gruel? Come on Gertrude, that’ll be three pence a spoonful and an extra pound if I have to dish up seconds. Washing up after is another pound. Oh, you need to go to the loo? Gotta pay up first and add a tip if you need toilet paper.

The fine is attached to Home Care Fees. Not normal kindness shown by strangers in public places. This likens a moving company who charges extra to haul personal possessions upstairs to an apartment. Move in at a fraction of the cost if one were to live on the first floor. If the home car nurses find themselves unable to assist their patient then why are they thus employed. The responsibility comes with the job description. Visiting Angels in USA - are they considering this step to up their ante? Call Joan Lundon and ask

Guns aren’t banned here you know, you just have to undergo more thorough checks and criteria in order to get them. You can still get them as long as you are sane and have no criminal record. Seems like common sense to me. I’m far less likely to need one because we have far fewer lunatics with access to guns able to go on homicidal rampages with these incredibly powerful force multipliers that give them the capability to slaughter many more people than they could otherwise do if they merely had a knife or some other crude implement. But I digress, if Americans think the freedom to have unrestricted access to firearms without reasonable background checks etc and are prepared to accept the higher murder rate and regular atrocities at the hands of crazies, that is entirely up to you guys as long as you are honest about it.

I am however, as with most people, far more likely to need hospital treatment during my lifetime, especially as I get older and things inevitably start to go wrong later in life. Fortunately, I pay a modest flat-rate National Insurance contribution just like every other citizen which does not depend on how healthy I am, nor how many times I have been in hospital needing treatment. When I lived in the states, a garage mechanic neighbour of ours had a massive heart attack and couldn’t work for a long time and he couldn’t get any insurance, which meant he would have had a massive bill if he had ever been sent to hospital again and would have been made bankrupt and lost his home. He had a wife and kids, and we all had to muck together to donate clothes and toys to give them a decent christmas. I love a lot of things about America, it was a great neighbourhood and the people where some of the most open and friendly I’ve ever met, but this irrational hatred of decent public healthcare is insane. Your private insurance lobby industry has certainly done a sterling job propagandising against it by convincing you how awful the NHS is, even though most of us who have actually experienced it can tell you that it isn’t like that at all. America is a far richer country per capita than the UK and it could well afford to make sure that its lower paid citizens could get decent healthcare if they ever found themselves in the unfortunate position of needing it.

carrying a gun has saved my life at worst or from receiving great bodily harm at best three times

as to healthcare, the poor have welfare and those that don't can NOT be refused care in the ER.

and as you don't sign any of your belonging as collateral so there's nothing they can do about it if you don't pay, people claim bankruptcy every day

where you get taxed for everything right into the poorhouse while you pay for THOUSANDS of muslime families to breed like rats and live in million lb mansions and "Estates"

America had the best healthcare system in the world till the mutt in the whitehut moved in

and even now, i'll STILL take our system over yours any day, but then again you are a subject, where i am a citizen and free man
