I think that this whole thread is over reacting. The idiots from the left have proposed a bill like this just about every year to ban assault weapons, and it fails every time. It will again, and I will do everything in my power to make sure that is the case.

Now I am someone who writes my congressman every time this happens and I will again with this, and I encourage everyone else to do as well, but I don’t think it is honest to create panic when we are winning the battles.

Gun control IS the new third rail, even if Obama thrashes and screams every time there is some gun crime (except black on black of course, and By the Way, the NRA was a product of ARMING former slaves against the KKK). But that is OK, I like to watch Obama thrash and scream. I enjoy it!

The Republicans own congress for the rest of Obama’s term, and nobody has any desire for political suicide in passing this horrible bill. It would be civil war. And there has been no big change in anything that would change previous votes on this exact subject. In fact, polling has shown the opposite, that there is NO interest in any sort of AWB or magazine ban or registration or even background check.

Just chalk it up to Obama being THE most divisive president since the civil war, and this bill would mean civil war. The drug hazed brain dead congressmen and senators who propose this crap can be voted down. We just have to educate the rest where reality is, for the country, and for them and their political futures.

Yes and no.

This bill won't make it to a vote, and it has no hopes of going anywhere.

This year, anyways.

HOWEVER, it serves as an incredibly important warning on why gun owners and 2nd Amendment advocates can never give an inch - not a single one - on any gun control measure.

Recall that the popular refrain from Democrats and gun-control advocates is that they "aren't coming for your gun(s)." All they're doing is proposing "common sense" measures like registration and sale/transportation restrictions.

This bill, which has over 130 cosponsors btw, provides good insight into how they plan to proceed. This bill doesn't take anyone's gun away. It simply makes it impossible for one to to buy a new gun or sell or transfer (say, via last will/testament following death) their gun(s). It's a form of grandfathering - the gun's aren't confiscated en-masse ... they're simply collected once their owner has passed away and disposed of.

Now even this is laughable as a near-term possibility. What we have to do is be vigilant about enabling actions, such as mandatory registration. This proposed law is THE case for opposing registration - gun control advocates, through their allies in Congress and this bill, have telegraphed that their goal IS to take away guns. That can ONLY happen following mandatory registration. And, indeed, is the underlying purpose of registration. So it's registration that must be fought, tooth and nail.
