My sons, grandson and I saw the Globetrotters at Madison Square Garden Sunday, for a shootaround at 3:30 and a 5 PM game. Their leadup to the game honored many of the old time ‘Trotters, including Meadowlark, but I didn’t hear about his passing. I assume the news came in later.

The new guys put on as great a show as the old ones did, thought the names are less familiar.

A True legend- He was a tireless worker- loved the game, spent nearly every single day travelling and playing- for many many years- He loved entertaining- He became a minister later in life, but still managed to keep playing nearly 365 days a year- Waking up every day and praying, then heading to the gym to practice his famous hook shots to stay sharp

He will be sorely missed

They even came to play at our little high school in Plano, Illinois. I even got his autograph. Meadowlark was one of the true ambassadors for sports entertainment . . . and he brought joy to millions.

The Globetrotters came to our school every year. My dad told me that it was so we would know what Negroes looked like. But then, that was the extra-racist 60’s.

I remember one skit where he came out and pulled off his warm-up pants to reveal that he was only wearing his boxers with big red hearts. He had to run off court and put on his shorts.

Heh heh, if we combined it with the other famous person who passed away yesterday, it would be “Meadowlark Lemmy.”

I believe is was 1970/1971 my dad took me to a Hawks game and before the game was a harlem globetrotters exhibition. Never forgot it. That was a fun thing to do if you were a kid then. In later generation I don’t think the Globetrotters were quite the attraction.
