Google maps and the Rio Grande

Posted on 01/01/2016 6:55:25 PM PST by Smellin Salt

I don't know why this came as a shock to me, but I was looking at Google maps and noticed that the Rio Grande, the river that is the border between Texas and Mexico, was labelled as Rio Bravo. North of El Paso, where the river cuts through New Mexico, it's labelled as the Rio Grande. Further investigation revealed that the Mexican name for the river is Rio Bravo. So, surprise surprise, Google is pandering to the left and it's illegal minions.

That’s nothing. Go to a world map and look for Tibet.

Google is not pandering. Old maps from the last two centuries are labeled that way.

Not only that, but it is quite possible for interested parties to change names on Google maps and Earth. I've seen it done. I had to change back a street name on property I own that someone intentionally changed to a vanity name (not what was on county records). I posted a trouble report with Google, and they changed it back (so far). Perhaps that is what happened?

That river has always been called Rio Bravo by Mexico, and Rio Grande by the US. I had a map once that had both names printed on the respective sides of the border.

That’s possible. I detest Google but Rio Bravo and Rio Grande have been opposite each other on maps for centuries.

I'm more alarmed that you didn't know that.

Google is pandering to the left...anybody catch the Google ads during the New Years Eve broadcasts last night - amazingly blatant leftwing propaganda - asking "why did we have a Cuban embargo?" and pictures of an American plane landing there implying that Obama was perfectly correct in ending our rejection of that murderous regime, and Kristin whats her name Jenner talking about we should all be more tolerant and what's wrong with being proudly transgendered, among others - shockingly biased and in your face advocacy for far-left causes by a company which has forced its tentacles deep into so much of our culture......

Ah, the good old days when freaks were kept in a tent at the circus.

In South Texas, the river is routinely referred to as the Rio Bravo -- by Anglos and Latinos alike.

Most maps show both names.

In South Texas, do non-Latinos call themselves "Anglos"?

Yeah thats the rub with me. I grew up about 60 miles north of the river and never heard it referred to as the Rio Bravo. Upon digging out my old paper maps, I see Rand McNally evidently never referred to it by any name other than the Rio Grande.
I guess it’s a good thing that the big body of water that I fished in my whole life is already called the Gulf of Mexico. Keeps Google from having to rename it.
