My standard response to the initial identity they state is that I don't take solicitations over the phone or at the front door. If they insist they are not soliciting, I read them the definition of solicitation. The calls never go past that moment.

My favorite way to deal with these irritations is the one a guy used telling the caller the call has come to a crime scene and to stay on the line for witness testimony since the caller asked for the deceased by name ...

I like the decreased one. I’ve also used the one where, when you pick it up you say: “Hold on...someone’s at the door.” and just leave the phone on the counter. I’ve checked it about a minute later and they’re never still on the line.
