No. I have a osteomyelitis and moschcowitz syndrome. Both very crippling when they come about. They are treatable, but then they can converge with other diseases. It can ravage my bones and blood stream. I also have colitis. It’s not fun.

My grandpa never spoke of his time in WWII. He was a fighter pilot. I did not know about what he did until my grandma gave me his journal and showed me many pictures. He was very ashamed of his past and I think that is what made him die. The sadness. But there are some things I read in his journal I found disturbing and still I cannot put my mind around that they did those things to the Chinese and even Americans. Raped, dismembered, suicide bombings using civilians strapped with bombs and hide in caves. That’s not honor.

Read up on Total War. Total War is a concept meant to demoralize and destroy a civilian population.

What you will draw from it is that there is no reason for shame for the commitment of your elders to win their war. We, as Americans, did many horrific things as well: The firebombing of Dresden. The nuclear weapon detonations. Many millions of tinier acts of savagry.

I hold no —NO — guilt in my heart for those things, for those times. Total War was a necessary concept at the time. Frankly, I’m glad we won, however savage that win was.

Relax your mind about those times. Hold no guilt. If your grandpa is alive, tell him that this particular American absolves him and understands. Total War was necessary.
