By the end of the year, GE will cease production and sales of compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), the manufacturer announced this morning. Moving forward, the company's focus will fall entirely on halogen incandescents and on high-efficiency LEDs.
"CFL's kind of been the light bulb that everybody loves to hate," explained John Strainic, chief operating officer of GE Lighting, citing the history of complaints about CFL dimmer compatibility, brightness delay, and quality of light. Strainic says that the industry has come a long way, but admits that the perception of inferior performance lingers. "Ultimately, LED offers a better solution at a comparable price."
The move reflects the shifting landscape of the lighting aisle, where the phase-out of classic 40W and 60W incandescents has made room for more efficient options like LEDs and halogen incandescents. With the prices of those other options coming down considerably in the last few years, the relevance of CFLs has been in decline.
"You end up with a shelf that has (halogen) incandescents on one side and your energy-saving, longer-life LEDs on the other, and the CFLs in the middle get squeezed," Strainic said. "It's already happening."
Strainic also points out that Energy Star's efficiency standards are set to rise to 80 lumens per watt in 2017. When that happens, most compact fluorescents will no longer qualify for utility rebates. The wide majority of those rebate dollars will shift to LEDs, Strainic says

OR, they have finally realized that they are on the hook for TRILLIONS of dollars in long-term environmental liability from the Mercury poisoning and landfill contaminations that are sure to come?
good job all of us horders of incandescents.
Good. LEDs work just fine without being toxic hazards. I’m replacing all my lights with LEDs as I run out of replacement incandescents, and like the notion of “never have to replace it again” (just don’t get the _cheapest_ you can find; the GE ones don’t cost much more but I’ve had zero problems with them).
Now if I could just find an LED drop-in replacement for fluorescent tubes.
I think the fluorescent tubes found in most offices for the last 50 years also have mercury.
I’m no defender of cfls, believe me, but the mercury isn’t the biggest problem.
Now we can pay $8 a bulb instead of getting a 4 pack of incandescents for a $1.99
LEDs Rock!
No brainer, LEDs are way better.
I was totally against LED’s when they first came out, but they actually cut the electric bill significantly. Mine is 1/2 of what it was before LEDs. So that is a positive. Not sure I like the mandatory thing but if people want a pay raise then changing out the bulbs will give them more of their paychecks.
I have seen those at Costco and the Home Despot. I don't know how well they work. Costco also sells shoplights that have the same general form as the traditional fluorescent variety, but use LEDs.
leds are fantastic now with their different light grades, fixtures, and even the prices coming down. i’ll always keep my incandescents though. nothing like warm light with some heat for some applications.
And how you you paying to power those incandescent lights? LED lights have been dropping in price. Quite rapidly.
CFL’s are, were and always will be overpriced JUNK.
LED’s are better, but the light is insanely bright white, with no warmth, and you only get light emitting in about 1 hemisphere.
Incandescent is still the cheapest and best lighting overall IMHO... but of course its virtually illegal.
Hopefully they LED issues can be resolved, compacted and not so sterile of a light color.

Oh sure. 8 dollars for 25 years or 4 of 1.99 every year. Financial management isn’t your forte is it?
CommEd, at one time,
delivered incandescent bulbs to you door...FREE!
LED bulbs can be bought at Walmart for $2.44 a piece. They are made by TCP and good quality.
So true. I love them.
“Now if I could just find an LED drop-in replacement for fluorescent tubes.”
Hopefully, with GE going full throttle into the LEDs we’ll be able to change out the old 4’ tube fixtures. More competition is always better. Right now the price point is around $40 for an LED shop type fixture. I still have a supply of 4’ T-12s but will gladly upgrade to LED if I can get the units for less than $30.
