SF sucks.

Not as much as other cities. That nice museum in Philly that Rocky Balboa ran up? Go around the block to the back side and it's a ghetto district where you can get killed. Visit the White House in Wash DC, go two blocks and hit a ghetto district where you can get killed. Visit the tourist district in Seattle and the neighborhood a few blocks away gets dicey. Atlantic City, well try venturing more than a few blocks from the boardwalk. The ghetto is largely confined to the southeastern side of SF far from tourist destinations, and is still relatively safe - worst part is far better than the best part of other cities. The thing about SF is that there is little crime as compared to other cities, or not as much. Go across the bay to Oakland and you'll see a stark difference. You must be referring to the Castro District, and yes that sucks but it's still relatively safe.

True, I don't want to be there, you're right. But it has improved lately. It was a craphole 30 years ago. I know, I worked there for a brief time at a building on Polk Street as an I.T. engineer. I was on call 24/7, and had to navigate the hookers and drug dealers in the middle of the night. 30 years ago. But then lots of asian families moved in, parks sprung up and children played during the day. It's better now, although there are still corners with hookers and homeless, close to Market St. The Tenderloin has always been the theater district, and well-heeled people still see plays while navigating the seamier denizens there. Just don't be out too late. It was nice in the 1960s. While in a rock band I played some dance halls there (and at the same building I worked at later in 1985). Redevelopment in SOMA (south of Market) pushed all the seamier people up into the Tenderloin in the 1970s, and it got bad. Now it's flipped again with families living there. Neighborhoods change over time.

Personally, if I were visiting as a tourist (and can pay for the Hilton), I'd rent a luxury home down the peninsula, Belmont or further south, and drive a rental car to get to the city or elsewhere (like Santa Clara for the game). That's what some relatives do, much safer and more luxurious.
