With technology you can take the boredom out of the game. For example, for a football game that starts at 1pm, DVR the telecast and then return at around 3:15pm to start watching. If you work the remote well, easy to learn, you will watch every play and finish the game around the time the game ends in real time. NFL games should be 1hr, NCAA games 1hr 10min. Use the same technique for other sports, MLB 1hr. NHL 1hr 15min. Wiz right through the commercials and dead time, and sports becomes exciting. The only side effect is you can never return to watching sports live, it moves too slow.

Here in Seattle we had to watch the last couple of games on DVR after church. Then we watched Denver the next weekend real-time. Makes it even longer when you don’t really care who wins! But - fun times with good friends.

When I watch by myself, I flip forward 30 seconds, past the huddle as well. I only have to watch the action. A game goes really quick that way.

I am a hockey fan and I would never shorten the game as you say (though of course getting rid of commercials I would do, if I DVR a game). Hockey is so beautiful and exciting that I enjoy every minute (”enjoy” unless my team is losing a playoff game in which I am shredding the choice and bleeding from several arteries...). But you are right, there is less waiting in hockey than football.
