John Dawson Winter III (February 23, 1944 â July 16, 2014), known as Johnny Winter, was an American musician, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Best known for his high-energy blues-rock albums and live performances in the late 1960s and 1970s, Winter also produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for blues singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. After his time with Waters, Winter recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 63rd in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".[1]

I think we need to work on a series:
Fender Gods (strat v. tele)
Gibson Gods
Gretch Players (cause, really, they ain’t any kinda “god”)
Thoughts?
I miss Tobacco Road, Rock and Roll Hoochie Coo, (Saw Rick Derringer do it, awesome) Highway 61 revisited...
Gotta love Texas guitar players. Johnny and SRV, two of the best.
If you’re a JW fan, check out Alan Haynes. Alan was a bit of a Winter protege, and Winter’s drummer played with Alan after Johnny.

That is a great Album. I liked his other Alligator Record stuff, too. I bought the 2 that came out after that, but the names escape me now.
Saw Johnny live way back when - great show, fine artist. The opening act was Black Oak Arkansas.
My father’s funeral was yesterday.
He is buried about 20 yards away from JP “Big Bopper” Richardson; another notable musician like Johnny and Edgar Winter who were from Beaumont.
I have both a Fender Strat (standard American)and 2 Gibsons, standard Les Paul and a ES-135.
I think the Gibsons are easier to play, but I love the Strat sound, noises and all.
John Dawson Winter.
Yes!
Truly a great,
I read his autobiography about 1 or 1 1/2 years ago.
I saw him play in some great venues back in the day.
Just remarkable blues and slide work.
His later stuff with Muddy Waters (before he died) was just great.
Ah, the Gretsch White Falcon double cutaway (6136DC).
What an instrument!
You sound well armed.
I am really thinking about a Strat. (currently have a Les Paul)
My Dad died in 1988....I think of him all the time.
When we talk “git-box”, you gotta include the Gretcsh simply because of their pick-ups.
Matched to Marshall amps...they straight-up screamed!
Not a lot of “finesse” on the pedal, but they shouted everyone down in the bridge.
If they have more than one model you like in the store, play them all. Strats can be hit and miss sometimes, even the American ones.
Don’t go for looks so much.
Thanks, Groucho
I also have a Strat and a Les Paul. Love them both for different reasons. I agree about the Gibsons being easier to play, but when it comes to emulate that old 60s Hendrix/Gilmour/Clapton sound, gotta go for the Strat. I’d love a Tele someday.
A Telecaster is another on the list of “wants” (I like country a lot too).
