Pentagon Kills Its Killer Drone Fleet
Daily Beast ^ | February 11, 2016 | David Axe

Cutting-edge killer drones will not be flying over the world’s oceans any time soon. The Defense Department’s budget proposal for 2017, released on Feb. 9, terminates an on-again, off-again program dating back to the late 1990s that aimed to develop a bomb-hauling robotic jet capable of launching from and landing on the U.S. Navy’s aircraft carriers. The decision to cancel the so-called Unmanned Carrier Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike is reflected in the Defense Department’s 2017 budget proposal, released on Feb. 9. The proposal shows a combined $818 million in funding for the UCLASS killer drone program in 2015 and 2016 and, abruptly, no money at all in 2017.

0bama wants to leave a legacy of helplessness. Hopefully the CIA will be still operating it’s fleet.

Its 1939, and we’ve just decided the future of naval warfare is battleships.

Maybe it wasn’t environmentally friendly?

I’m not very militaristic but it sounded like a viable future workable weapon.

Day of the Drones is coming, terrorists will start using them on a grand scale, i bet Iran already has assembly lines of them.

You forget the huge expense involved with the new women in combat rifleman/tanker program - all those separate facilities! Can you imagine how much it costs to retrofit all those M1A1s, for example, for female sanitation? And let’s not get started on the expense involved with lactation and pregnancy awareness classes for males ... all this comes before the Pentagon buys more un-flyable planes and self-sinking ships.

The future military belongs to the self-sexed, the homeless, the illegal immigrants, the hungry.

Pentagon Kills Its Killer Drone Fleet

Without knowing anything about the military or military aircraft, I know this is dumb. The Pentagon is turning it's back on the future and a chance to extend the US lead in technology in favor of spending billions on outdated, outrageously overpriced manned planes.

Maybe it is too easy to have the drone taken over by the enemy when automated?

Lots of countries now have long range anti ship missiles.

the missiles have longer range than our attack planes from carriers.

this means that our huge expensive high-tech carriers are not nearly as safe as they used to be.

UCLASS would have meant that our carriers could again Loiter offshore from a safe distance.

But now?

No.

I feel it is a mistake. I am an advocate of piloted craft, but also believe there is a large area of operations that may be addressed by drones.

It is obvious that homosexuality integration, new maternity utilities and sensitivity training are far more important than actual combat operations.

I don't know the particulars about the UCLASS, but the title is a bit misleading.

The Navy still has it's less sexy MQ-8 Fire Scouts. USAF has MQ-1s and the MQ-9 is still in production. There are several other UAS in development and test.

To say the the Pentagon has killed its "Killer Drone Fleet" is not correct.

Here's the X-47B proving the concept of an unmanned drone operating from the flight deck of a modern carrier.

“Maybe it is too easy to have the drone taken over by the enemy when automated?”

Nope. This type of plane is autonomous, just like a cruise missile. It flies it’s route, dispenses munitions, then returns to the ship and lands. It’s all preprogrammed.

The difference is it’s a few thousand dollars for the flight (plus whatever cost of munitions), rather than ~$1,000,000 for the non-renewable cruise missile.

It’s ridiculous this is being canceled.

“To say the the Pentagon has killed its “Killer Drone Fleet” is not correct.”

None of those drones are in the same class. This one was stealthy, flew at high subsonic speeds, and could carry (IIRC) 2 2,000 lb bombs, or a variety of other munitions.

The title is hyperbole.

“The title is hyperbole.”

A better headline would have been:

“Pentagon Kills It’s Most Advanced Drone”

with a subheading of

“Navy Loses A Major, Highly Effective, Strike Capability And Puts Pilots At Increased Risk”

It is a truly idiotic move. These drones had a perfect record on carrier landings, and were more stealthy than the F-35.

Pesky apostrophes! ;-)
