Ferruccio Lamborghini Fixed His Hated Ferrari With A Clutch From A Tractor
JALOPNIK ^ | 16.02.17 | Máté Petrány

This is the Lamborghini story like you’ve never heard it before: from the son of Ferruccio, Tonino Lamborghini, the kid sitting at the dinner table.

If you’re in the Bologna area, you must visit the Ferruccio Lamborghini Museum. It was set up by Ferruccio’s son, who started collecting his father’s tractors and cars back in the day despite the fact that his old man thought he should be working instead of collecting old stuff. But as more and more vehicles ended up in the warehouse, Ferruccio started to spend more time in there as well, smoking cigarettes and enjoying the past.

Most people know Lamborghini started making cars using his tractor company money because Enzo Ferrari was rude to him, but there’s a lot more to that story.

Ferruccio had two Ferraris, but when he couldn’t race the locals because his clutch gave out, he went to Modena with an idea for a solution instead of just to complain—Ferruccio used a clutch from one of the tractors as a replacement.

But Enzo wasn’t going to listen to a tractor maker...

Delightful article on the great petrol-head site "Jalopnik" and something our beloved Kenny Bunk knew a bit about, having known the family.

A great friend of mine offered to sell me his Ferrari 308 GTB for $16,000 in 1984. It needed a clutch. I needed a car. Passed on it. Oh, well.

In 1966 Daddy agreed to buy me a used car to go to college in.

We drove down to Ft. Walton Bch. and began looking. Ft. Walton Motors had a Jaguar XK-150 for $300. It needed an engine rebuild and they would do it for another $300. That was more than my Father would pay.

I ended up with a 55 Ford which ran like a bat out of hell.

Of course even if I had gotten the Jag. it would have been traded off years ago. Still I like to imagine myself driving it.

The elder Lamborghini grew to hate Enzo Ferrari (who did not make many friends) and decided to make his own car to compete. One of the most famous Lamborghinis was the Muira:

Maserati fought back with the Bora:

Both companies continue today. And Ferrari is just releasing the V8 Twin Turbo, 670 hp 488 GTB: photo 488-1_zps0hy6wsc5.jpg

But does the old white tractor have “Lambo doors”? LOL

On a related note, my favorite Lamborghini is still the Countach. Not nearly as fast as the newer cars but had such a cutting edge design when it came out that I swore I’d own one. Haven’t gotten it yet, but haven’t given up the dream either.

I think that's an awful color, especially for a Lamborghini. (dark gray)

I am currently looking at higher-end sports cars. In consideration in order of preference: McLaren 570S, Ferrari 488 GTB, Lamborghini Huracan, Audi R8/R8 V10 Plus, Porsche 911 Turbo/GT3 RS 4.0. I live at high altitude in the Colorado Rockies so a normally aspirated engine like the Huracan or R8 loses so much power or I would consider higher.

I just looked on ebay and they’re still out of my price range. Looks like I’ll be waiting a bit longer.

Did it look anything like these?

Something tells me, no.

In any case, 55 Chevy was the real deal!

I came of age in the 80s. I started the decade playing with and collecting Matchbox cars, got my DL in the middle years of the decade, and bought my first car towards the end of it. It was during the 80s that my male car gene got switched on, and I always liked the Countach as well. Jay Leno does a nice, nostalgic look back at it here:

No mine was a four door brown and tan. It had a 3 speed manual on the column but with overdrive.

What really made it go was the 4:11 rear end and the 272 V-8. Also the dual exhausts didn’t hurt.

Of course that Jag would have beat it easily except maybe for the first 50 feet.

Now a friend had a 56 with really deluxe interior. Padded everywhere and seat belts. If memory serves he also had a 312 with a four barrel and Ford-o-matic trans.

my 55 would walk off and leave it in a drag. I beat him so bad that everyone began calling it Henry’s slowmobile.

I have a friend who deals in used cars. He’s had many of the super cars at one point or another. I’ve had the opportunity to drive many of them.

Each of the makers has a specific “feel” to them. They are suited to a driving style and either you like that style or you don’t. Most people who have bought these super cars simply have no idea why they bought it, other than they always wanted one.

Drive each of them first - don’t make the decision on specs and numbers.

If you want a car to drive regularly, you’ll end up with the Porsche. No other cars provide the performance with the handling and ride you can live with. You might even like the Cayman GT4.......

IMHO, of course

My ride is a lowly ‘11 Cayman S.........far more than I’d ever want in a car.........in my mind, far more beautiful car than all those on your list.....and I’ll never find its limits unless I race it.......
