Part of the trouble with that statement is they are evaluting both as politicians. The proper analysis is to consider that Trump's donations were as a businessman. Duh, he was operating out of New York. Of course he made protection payments to politicians. He would be a fool not to. Not many opportunities to donate to a conservative in New York. Now if a politician made the same donation himself or via a PAC, that would be a red flag accompanied by a siren.
