Read the article. He's saying the opposite.
Whether he really would have said the same thing in 2008 or 2012 I don't know, but his message is:
If you don’t say no at some point, gang, you’re never going to get a nominee to whom you can actually proudly stand up and say yes. You’re always going to be the sucker, because they can just take your vote for granted.
I think he's wrong, though. If you can only vote for people you agree with 100% you're not going to be voting much and won't have a say in what happens in the country.
Unless he said it in the past he has zero credibility.
