Keep hoping.

The more regulations, the more government control. They don’t care about actual deaths (average of 30K per year).

Wanna bet it puts on the brakes for a newspaper blowing in the wind, a gust of dust, and a squirrel? (I would not brake for the paper and the dust. I would brake for the squirrel if there’s no one right behind me)

Absolutely. Sometimes you're driving along and a blanket or tarp works loose from a pickup truck ahead of you. No big deal to drive through it, but slam on your brakes and the car behind you would plow into you. Or a small animal runs across your path on a winding road. You easily do the swerving moves to avoid hitting it. But if your brakes were applied you could swerve right off the curve down a cliff. I trust my braking instincts and would never want the car to make the choice to brake.

I had a van with an automatic braking system. When I slammed on the brake to avoid a car that pulled out in front of me, the automatic braking system started pumping the brake. I hit the car (I was going slow, so it was not bad) thanks to that automatic “assistance” and I sold the van immediately.

Oh f*cking great. I just hope it works better than the f’n tire pressure sensor equipment on my pickup truck. Bought it in Sept of 2015 and had it back to the dealer 3 times and they have yet to get the thing to work for more than 2 weeks. And all because a bunch of idiots were too damn lazy to check their tire pressures once in a while and their tires failed and caused their SUV’s to roll over.

My Honda Accord Touring has it if I have cruise control set. I can determine how many feet behind a vehicle I want to be.

Do you have to be in cruise control?

Automatic emergency braking is not a component of the cruise control, or even adaptive cruise control. They are two separate systems. And they have to be, because your cruise control is a user activated feature.

"I, like you, gladly spent the extra money for this package."

I didn't pay extra for this. I paid extra for the WHOLE car as I got the touring model V-6. :-) It already has a lot of features that I have no idea how to work. Since this is the last car I will be getting I splurged. It is a 2014 and I don't know if there is a way for the auto braking to work outside of the cruise control. I will have to check with the dealer.

Nope, no way-I’ll keep my old 1995 4x4 that has none of that crap-it does have cruise control, but I’ve never used it. On these curvy, hilly country roads-and everywhere else-I trust my judgment-not that of an inanimate object-anyone who owns a computer knows that electronics can fail at the worst possible times...

This sounds like an easy steal for carjackers-pull in front of a vehicle you want, slam on brakes, run back to the other vehicle, throw out the driver, take their vehicle and go...

It also sounds like a new cash cow for ambulance chasing attorneys-sue, sue, sue...

Just curious about the approach you'd use with a current vehicle in this situation? Do you give them an Earnhardt and spin them off into the median?

I’ve already had a near-confrontation with a vehicle whose driver acted strangely several years ago. I didn’t know or care whether they wanted my 4x4 or the building materials-hardiboard and tiles-in the back of it, but when they pulled in front of me on a 2 lane FM, slamming on brakes, stranger danger kicked right in-I tapped the brakes to slow enough to swerve around, stomp the accelerator and take the 1st left into driveway of the local mechanic’s shop. I’m not some little wuss of a female-I fight back...

It's sounds like you're talking about adaptive cruise control. That is totally separate from automatic emergency braking. My adaptive cruise control has stop/start functionality, which brings the car to a complete stop and starts it back up, as long as there is a car in front of me to bounce the radar off of. But, that is not automatic emergency braking, which will apply the brakes if you are about to crash into something. It works whether or not your cruise control is activated

I have no idea what it is called. I know I can set one of three distances I want to follow behind a car and if that car slows down it slows me down. Also if a car stops or slows way down to make a turn it will suddenly apply the brakes and wait for the car to turn. When it does this it is sudden and gives me a jerk. So I would say it is automatic emergency braking so I don't hit the car.
