Charlie Watts is a great drummer; no doubt about it. I love the Stones. They’re amazing.
Miss those guys.
(In the face!)
Absolutely agree about bass players. The first one I really noticed in my younger days was Tiran Porter of the Doobie Brothers, probably still my all-time favorite bassist, along with Ox and Chris Squire.
John Entwistle (The Who)
I wasn’t insinuating he lacked talent. I’m just not a big fan of the style in most of the songs.
I guess not. :)
Outstanding!
Completely different types of music. A swing style of drumming would be completely out of place in a Rush piece as would a rock style of drumming would be out of place in a Jazz piece. Interestingly a few of the comments re: Pearts performance at the Buddy Rick tribute, was that Peart didnt have enough swing; not that I, or more importantly some of my professional musician friends and family members, several of them being professional drummers, agree with that.
And I would disagree that Peart never did anything as technically complex with Rush.
The thing is that the drum solo is not something heard on most LPs- CDs anymore. it is mostly something performed only in concert. But Pearts drumming is literally the heartbeat of Rush and their very complex compositions in addition to writing most of the lyrics for most of their compositions, and I say compositions rather than songs on purpose. Also Geddy Lee is no slouch himself as hes considered to be one of the top 10 rock bassists of all time. And Alex Lifeson is a very good guitarist as well.
Ive seen Rush twice in concert, but neither time did they perform either of my one of my all-time favorites - The Trees or Free Will and alas they are retiring from touring so I will probably never will ; ( But they did play Red Barchetta : )
The interplay between Lees bass, Alex Lifeson guitar and Pearts drumming on those three songs are amazing.
Swing in the drums has been integral to Rock music from the beginning.
Just ask Bill Ward, Charlie Watts, Ringo Star (Day Tripper) or Jon Bonham. Lars Ulrich employs it strategically.
It was the later mechanics that moved away from it. The human drum machines.
It's Peart's core competency...a mechanic.
Though I thought he showed good swing in the Cottontail video, didn't you?
Drum solos are boring, at best. Good drummers don't like them as they prefer to accompany good music...or lead it.
What Lars does isn’t swing, it’s getting out of time. The band has complained about it many times, check it out.
>>Lars Ulrich can barely keep time
That’s what click tracks are for. Or something.
That being said...

I think he’s the Wrecking Crew of the skins.
Peart was prone to drummer porn but that was acceptable in a 3 man band. What made Rush great was that they were 3 outstanding musicians that stayed together. Usually those bands fly apart from sheer ego-ness.
