Former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has died at the age of 46 after fighting cancer, his family has said.

Mr. Ford, who battled drug and alcohol addiction, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2014.

He gained international notoriety after admitting smoking crack cocaine in 2013, but he was loved by his supporters.

"A dedicated man of the people, Councillor Ford spent his life serving the citizens of Toronto," his family said in a statement.

He could not run for re-election as mayor in 2014 due to his cancer diagnosis, but won a city council seat in a landslide result.

His image contrasted sharply with Canada's usual calm, buttoned-up politics.

Reacting to his death, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted: "Rob Ford fought cancer with courage and determination. My condolences and best wishes to the Ford family today."

The current mayor of Toronto, John Tory, said in a statement that "the city is reeling with the news"......

I kinda got a kick out of the joke going around a few years ago ... a signpost entering Toronto:

"Welcome to Toronto .. our Hockey team sucks, and our Mayor is a crackhead"

Funny stuff, RIP Mr. Ford ... but at least Toronto doesn't have to deal with that asshole Mayor DeBlasio, he's no fun :(

Rudy please come back and stay in office until it’s time to meet your maker.

stabbings way up in the city. who knew you didn’t need a gun to hurt somebody?

Toronto had its own Marion Barry, or whatever his name was.

This guy was the Chris Farley of Canadian politics. Age 46 is way too young to go.

I remember he stated he might of smoked crack but wasn’t sure because at the time he was really really drunk.

Other than his substance abuse problems he reminds me of Donald Trump. He said what he wanted PC be damned. He got his city working and his constituents loved him.
