Local cake decorator denies service to gay wedding, receives social media backlash

ESCANABA, Mich. — An Upper Peninsula cake decorator is in hot water with several Facebook users as a controversial post slowly catching viral waves makes its way through the social network.

A recent status update by Bake It U.P. Cakes explains that the business denied services to a same-sex couple after it was commissioned to decorate a cake for an upcoming wedding. The decorator was unaware it was for a same-sex couple, and as soon as she found out, the business backed out of the transaction. The post states, "This has nothing to do with the person, or the lifestyle they choose. This is about me not participating in the event… I have nothing against this person for their choice in lifestyle. If this person had come to me for any other occasion and needed a cake I would have gladly made one for him."
.
.
The post ignited heated debate and fiery exchange from the LGBTQIA community and supporters of gay rights. "I've never tried the cakes, and I don't intend to. I'm bitterly disappointed in this business, as a friend of mine was discriminated against by the owner," said Eli Mai, regarding the incident. "He was refused service because he's gay. I can't believe this kind of blatant and hateful discrimination is legal."

Shouldn't the Gays be getting their wedding/birthday/comming out/etc... cakes at Erotic Cake shops anyways?

make sure an accident happens *just* before the "wedding"...

I'd not even go that far.

I'd bake the cake. And deliver it. With a big smile on my face, and a note....

"Here's the wedding cake that you forced me to bake. While there were plenty of other bakers who would have appreciated the business, you chose to force me to perform this service for you, for no other reason than, "You Could".

"While you enjoy it, think about the fact that, thanks to you, I've incurred substantial legal bills and had both my business and very livelihood put in jeopardy. Both myself, and my family have been subjected to numerous verbal and physical threats from people just like you, for no reason other than you felt the need to score a few political points at my personal expense.

"So.........Bon Appetit!!"

Man, I'd not go within 100 feet of a cake like that.

Jesus sent his disciples out as lambs among wolves, and told them to be as wise as serpents and gentle as doves.

I think the Christian community and businesses in particular have to think about that warning and how they can employ it to defend themselves.

I won’t offer any advice other than be prepared. Surely in prayer God might give inspiration how to protect yourself.

Is it too much of an ostrich strategy to just not have any kind of social media presence as a business? *sigh*

I’m so tired of the perpetually enraged and outraged.

I hear ya...but you've gotta remember that they're wired very differently, morally and ethically speaking. They would derive almost orgasmic delight (pun *absolutely* intended) in reading your note and passing it among their many pervert friends.

Just sayin....

>What I oppose is the GOVERNMENT coming in and saying this is wrong and sanctioning the business over it.

When’s THAT? After the health inspector is told how to ‘write-up’? When the biz license isn’t renewed in a ‘timely fashion’? Maybe ‘repairs’ in the parking; you know, the ‘broken’ trailer?...

Just a few of the myriad of ways govt can inject itself into others 1st A. Rights vs. their ‘favored group(s)’.

The role of govt has LONG been 180 from the ‘protect from invasion and the Rights of the Citizens’.

Easy to deal with...say yes, bake the cake and make sure an accident happens *just* before the "wedding"...offer profuse apologies and a full refund.

Word will get out among the local pervert community about how horrible the bakery is...problem solved.

Anything that isn't an outright refusal is a victory for "big Anus."

That is what I figured.

I guess that it all depends on if you have a strong enough lobbying group to make something that is clearly unhealthy and dangerous “normal.” Worst of all, we are all forced to accept it as “normal.”

Nutty! Absolutely nutty!

>My understanding is that “intersex” is the new term for a hermaphrodite or person born with ambiguous genitalia.

The ONLY *true* (scientifically) one of the whole group....whom get stigmatized by inclusion in the mentally unstable grouping. Damn shame, really.

>Now who’s bathrooms are they supposed to use?

IMO, the ONLY ‘group’ that I can say, “Whichever they’d wish to use”. What’s the % of the population w/ that ‘affliction’ (that that’d even be an issue)??

Anything that is not an outright refusal will be regarded as a win by "Big Anus".

You can couch your defeat in any rationalization verbiage you want, but the only way to win is to say "No. I will not do it."

They don't care how bad the cake is. What they care about is the fact they forced you to normalize their behavior.

I've heard the term for several years. I think it accurately describes what we are facing, and it is obviously derogatory as applied to those people who push that agenda.

I have many gay friends and I hire gays for my business. I had a gay couple over for dinner just the other day and they invited me to their upcoming wedding.
Deliberately cutting yourself off from gays is sad because you are missing out on life. What are you afraid of?
I belong to three historical collector clubs, each of which has several gay members. If you were also my friend and I invited you to a meeting would you embarrass me by causing public scene?
I urge you to re-examine your attitude. If you advertise your business to the public I believe you are obligated to serve anyone not disorderly (or too smelly if you happen to have a walk-in type of business).
As a private citizen you would be missing out on some colorful and interesting characters, I have had some wonderfully stimulating discussions with gay friend and associates....my life would have been duller without.
Some of the most dreadful people I’ve met were gay, gayness doesn’t seem to correlate with anything. Perhaps one can only learn this by not deliberately shutting oneself off from others.
A recent client of mine was an elderly ‘queen’ and when he passed I found among his effects his Purple Heart for storming a beach during WWII and getting wounded. I also found pictures of him performing as a drag queen. He most likely thought of each episode as being from his ‘glory days’. I have great sympathy for any good person trying to get through life with a little fulfillment and dignity. I try not to go out of my way to make things more difficult for others.

But a refusal,in today's climate, would very probably mean bankruptcy for the bakery/photographer/flower shop in question. And you can be sure that the *perverts* would consider that a *huge* victory.

>>This guy needs to be asked this question, “Should a black baker be forced to bake a cake for a KKK event?”.

Correction: “Would you EAT anything made by someone YOU forced to create?”

Cause, damn, that baker *could* have accidentally mistaken salt for the sugar, or pulled a little baking inspiration from “The Help”, or....

They have something better. They have the entire Media system streaming their decadent propaganda into the minds of the American public.

Politics is downstream from culture, and Hollywood has been pumping sewage into that stream for a long time.
