I can see an argument to be made as a spoiler vote against Trump but it would make more sense for those voters to support Cruz as the only remaining viable opposition at the start of the primary.
Why did Kasich do so well?

So why did 25% of NY vote for him?Because they are terminally stupid RINOs in a state which will automatically deliver 29 electoral votes to whomever the Democrats decide to run in November.
The last exception to this rule was RWR's 49 state blow-out in 1984.

Northeastern voters and especially NY voters, do not want a Southerner and especially an “evangelical” one as their preferred spoiler. Kasich runs more to the left and would appeal to the, “Yankee” point of view vs. Cruz.

Many of us believe he’s the strongest candidate against Clinton, that this election will determine the direction of the Supreme Court for the next two generations and I’d rather have him make those appointments than any of the other four, and that he has a life long conservative record with values much like my own.

Because they are voting for their choice.
It's possible that none of the candidates will reach the 1237 number.
It's not over until it's over. And it's not over yet.

Nobody likes Cruz. Kasich is purely an anti-Trump protest vote. Now that Cruz and Kasich are in the same no hoper boat Cruz will crater.

Protest vote against Cruz. They knew Trump was going to win anyway.

The voters saw Cruz as being just as much eliminated as Kasich.
If they want to protest vote, they’ll give it to someone they prefer, rather than Cruz.

As Cruz is more exposed over time, despite that you hardly see him but it’s a build up over time, people friggin’ hate him. He’s so full of sh$t, can not say the simplest thing without turnng it into an oration, etc. Some good policy, but painful to listen to or look at. NO ONE (except Amanda Carpenter) wants to have to put up with that man for an extended period of time.

What was particularly interesting to me was the fact that Bernie almost got as many votes as Trump, Kasich, and Cruz COMBINED.
Hillary got more votes than Trump, Kasich, and Cruz COMBINED.
This tells me there is ZERO chance of Trump being able to be competitive in his own state in the general.

That was the alternative non-Trump vote, partly because of the kerfuffle over "New York Values" (we knew what he meant), and partly because the 24/7 smear machine has been grinding away at Cruz support since Iowa. "Lyin'" is neither Mr. Cruz' first name, nor an accurate character assessment, just a Trumpist twitterism. Whining about "stealing" delegates who were up for grabs, glossing over CNN's announcement and blaming Carson's performance in Iowa (and Trump's lack of first place) on Cruz, The whole National Enquirer smear about infidelity (where's the follow-up, or was that just good for one set of primaries?), attacking Cruz over a PAC ad, then attacking his wife, distorting Cruz positions on issues, blaming the actions of 99 other Senators on Cruz for not autonomously passing or repealing what the others would not vote to pass or repeal, blaming Cruz for GOP rules over allocation of delegates after not pursuing the delegates in the first place, even claiming Cruz tried to ban sex toys (sheesh!).
Every smear campaign artfully timed to bring support to a low before an election day or a caucus or a convention.
Artful media manipulation, supported by sources which would have been shredded here in years past, to get a no-record Clinton donor with a past history of buying influence through political donations and support for the "Assault Weapons Ban" nominated for the Republican POTUS ticket (Bizarro World).
Way to control the narrative.

The big question now is, how will the mathematical elimination of Cruz effect all the upcoming primaries?
I think Trump will score victories in the 50+ percent range in all 5 NE primaries next week, and Cruz won’t get any delegates, but Kasich might pick up a few. Most of the 54 unbound delegates from Pennsylvania will probably end up voting for Trump at the convention.
