I think he will know well before the first ballot what his count would most likely be and if it were 1236 he'd flip an uncommitted before the first ballot. Delegates at the convention know what's going on before the actual vote.

IF the party really wants to WIN and DT does happen to go to the convention a few votes shy of 1237 ...
Then it will move to nominate by acclamation.
