It was about local merchants angry at the East India company (a multi-national corporation) for bribing British officials to alter tax code in their favor so they could undercut local merchants who were buying from... other sources, and using the British Army to force them to buy exclusively from the EIC, under color of law and penalty of death.

One of the first things they did after the revolution was over was raise a 15% tariff on imports to discourage the purchase of British goods, and protect local industries.

Plenty of similarities between then and now.
