This is not an awkward and embarrassing outreach to Hispanics. It's not aimed at Hispanics at all. It's aimed at white people. This is the kind of thing that Trump's base—the white working class—views as a perfectly sincere appreciation of Mexican culture. It says, "Yes, I want a wall, and yes, I want to deport all the illegal immigrants in the country. But that doesn't mean I hate Mexicans." It's basically an affirmation to Trump's voters that they aren't racists.
Plus it gets a ton of attention, and it also induces loads of mockery from overeducated PC liberals who don't understand a compliment when they see one. It's really a genius tweet.
Does everyone understand now? Trump is playing this game at a higher level than most of his critics.

The headline is correct, but the ‘reasoning’ is totally wrong. To be expected from the likes of Mother Jones.
I remember Mother Jones as an ever s slightly covert Communist mag.
Why does the linked article talk about a different tweet than the post?
And the “Mother Jones” article is nothing more than high sarcasm. I suspect most FR readers realize that and don’t take it as support or defense of Trump’s tweet.
There is no Mexican race.
This why we need a wall. It is an apolitical inanimate object that will do its job 7x24x365.
There is a way around this for Trump. 1) build the wall, 2) deport every criminal after getting enough information so they can never again enter the United States, 3) we will then discuss people here illegally who aren’t “criminals” and finally, 4) discuss plans and processes to move forward.
With a wall in place, illegal immigration stops. First thing first, stop the bleeding. This is what Trump needs to say and do. Too many people are being lumped into this and it throws everyone off message.
...and the media, not finding out what Trump was really saying....without climbing out of their beds to go into the streets where real human beings actually talk to one another...took the bait and ran with it...now they have egg all over their faces once again...see how easy it is to get the media to do whatever Trump wants???

There's also the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848), which ended the Mexican-American war and resulted in a lot of Mexican citizens gaining American citizenship. What's more interesting is that these old families tend to really dislike the new immigrants.
It just happens that many of them are Mexican.
That's quite true, but what's surprising is the number of OTM (other than Mexican) illegals there are: the result of Mexico facilitating the Central and South Americans traveling into the US.

Trump doesn't want illegals coming into the country. Period. It doesn't mean he dislikes Mexicans - it means he dislikes illegals.
Is that really so hard to understand?
