Can I buy a Linux disk and just put it in the CD drive and have it deport Windows back where it came from?

You don't need to "buy" a Linux disk, though it might be simpler for you to pay a few dollars than to create an installation DVD or USB drive from a downloaded ISO file. For Linux Mint, the free operating system downloads are here: https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

As for deporting Windows, when you install Linux you can choose whether or not to keep your Windows installation in a dual boot setup.

If you choose to overwrite your Windows installation instead of using dual boot, make sure you have all your personal data backed up to another drive.

Turns out it is the Shockwave plugin crashing.

And that was written two years ago.
