TECUMSEH, Mich. -- A Michigan couple who faced jail after they borrowed a novel and a Dr. Seuss book from a local library and held onto them long past their return dates will remain free.
Cathy and Melvin Duren of Tecumseh were charged with failure to return rental property and a judge told them in April that they faced up to 93 days and a $500 fine.

I bet they were given numerous notices, chances to make good, chances to replace the books, and they ignored them all.
I would not be surprised if they turned out to be lifelong scofflaws.
Anyone who is stupid enough to walk into a public library today, which have morphed over the years into little castles of liberal thought and indoctrination, deserves exactly what he gets.
Submit to the bureaucrats or its jail time. These citizens must realize there is no easy way out.
I agree. I would be much more stern toward those who defy the rules as opposed to those who accidentally make mistakes.

If I am not mistaken every town has a vote on public library operations expansions and improvements this comes from the people, let the people decide when the vote comes up if they overreached thier bounds. Bye bye! Are they taking a page out of the arrogance book of the EPA, and IRS?

Both of them are on disability. I wonder how many notices they got.
One source says they sent in a check for $55 to cover fees and the book costs, and that the city refused to cash it.
I have seen plenty of petty tyrants in local government.
So it could be either or both in this case.

Her husband, Melvin, 63, also faces charges after borrowing "The Rome Prophecy" last year and keeping it for eight months before returning it in January.
As a child, I worried about getting my books back to the library on time.

That’s largely true on the whole, but it’s not always so around here, but I live in the Bible Belt. About eight years ago I donated thousands of dollars worth of conservative Christian books and conservative political and economic books to an inner city library in Memphis. I know the librarian and she is a very conservative Christian who had mentioned their need for such books. She made a special section near the front for them and her staff regularly directed patrons to them. Today those books are nearly worn out. They have been the most commonly checked out materials in that branch.
Also, I live in a Memphis suburb and the librarian here is a Christian, too. I’ve never donated anything, but she buys a lot of Christian books and doesn’t push the liberal propaganda that many libraries push.
Sadly, a huge percentage of library users today go not for books, but for Internet access or to look for jobs.

I have two family members that work for them.
The stuff that is being printed as “kids books” that they are getting today would make people hurl.
I’m not sure of this library policy; however, I lost a book that I borrowed from my local library. TBH.. I wasn’t sure if it had been stolen or simply fell out of the car. I went to the library and explained the situation and the librarian was great. She said that although I could “pay” for a brand new one (the cost was something like $45 dollars), I could “replace” it with another copy as long as it was in good condition. I bought one via Ebay for $1.25 and that was that. Plus, the one that I purchased via Ebay was in better condition than the one that was lost/stolen.
AKA "stealing."
