“Those are hideous names for a girl in this day and age. I can’t imagine doing something so terrible to my daughter.”

Why on earth would you post something like that?

How old are you? Fourteen?

Some old-fashioned given names have aged well and some haven’t. I like seeing children with old family names for the most part, both girls and boys, but Ethel isn’t one of them. I don’t have any aunts or grandmothers with that name, so maybe I’m not seeing things in the same light as those who do. A favorite aunt of mine was named Josephine, and I was hoping my niece would be named for her, but she wasn’t. They went for popular names, not connected to family.

Why? Because it's true. As a first generation American who was born right after my parents came to America I can tell you first hand how damaging the wrong name can be. I dumped my old world name as soon as I could.
