I went last year and had a great time.

Hints:

Visit only in the French Quarter during the DAY
Be back at your hotel by early evening
Do not go past or down Rampart St.
Bourbon St. doesn’t smell like bourbon unless you want to count previously enjoyed bourbon
Don’t wait at the trolley stops for trolleys
Walk, walk WALK around the FQ during the day only.
Take a few guided tours: http://www.freetoursbyfoot.com/new-orleans-tours/

I would probably avoid uber rides as well.

You can go out after dark in the French Quarter - how else do you get to the jazz clubs, the restaurants and Preservation Hall?! The streets are crowded and while I don’t recommend hanging out on Bourbon Street because it gets wild and is full of cheesy tourist traps, I’ve never had a problem walking on it. It’s a nighttime city! But don’t hang out by yourself, drinking, until 4:30am in lousy neighborhoods...
