I have also had students shove me, wave meter sticks and math pointers close in around my face, threaten me with bodily harm ("I gonna f__ you up!"), throw my backpack to the floor, tell me they don't have to listen to me because I'm white, disconnect the phone when I attempted to call for assistance to the classroom, lay hands on me, leave the classroom at will, attempt to block my access to the classroom door when class was over, and NOTHING of any consequence was done to them. They were free to behave in this manner with little to no consequences whatsoever, so afraid the administration is of issuing too many suspensions to minority students. They'd rather a teacher leave on a stretcher (as one colleague did last year) than discipline one of these thugs.

Easy to be an armchair quarterback, eh Humble? I guess you'd give up a job that paid the bills in this economy when you can see the light at the end of the tunnel for retirement, right? It was not this way when I started teaching, and I never signed up for garbage like this. There are hundreds of veteran teachers being subjected to treatment like this, with no protection for them or consequences for the thugs called students. They are just counting the days until they can retire and reap a bit of financial reward for decades of service to the children of NYC.

BTW, while you are tossing around pejorative remarks about me without even knowing me---I am very small. These thugs are very typically 6' or more. You want your wife or daughter going up against one of them, who doesn't hesitate to manhandle woman or hurt people? Many of the "students" have done jail time, but we're not allowed to know that. Protect the student and all that. A pussy? My friends would laugh at that one.
