Hokkaido police said the parents initially told authorities that their son had disappeared while they were picking wild vegetables, but then admitted they made him get out of the car and then left him behind "as discipline." Police said the father returned to the site a few minutes later but the boy was gone.
The parents told police that they were punishing the boy for throwing rocks at people and cars while playing at a river earlier in the day, according to Japanese media.
The boy's father said in an interview with public broadcaster NHK and other TV stations that "I regret what I did to my child." He said he initially did not tell police the truth because he found it embarrassing to ask for a massive search for what happened as a result of the punishment.

But these parents should probably not reproduce.
East Asian discipline is often what we would call extreme. Among Japanese and Chinese both in China and around Southeast Asia I’ve observed cases of this. Usually not quite abusive but very strict to say the least.
You never got the “One more time and I’m stopping this car” threat? Mr Kitty got put out on the curb one time for fighting with his sister. His parents were back in under 5 minute, but he never fought with his sister while dad was driving again.
in this case, though, I think there’d more going on here.
Doesn’t sound like the kid has the best nature either. Maybe he decided that if his parents were going to try to teach him a lesson, he would turn the tables and teach them one.

I’ve been keeping up with the story in the Japanese press and virtually no one has come out in support of the parents. It is doubtful the story that the parents told of only leaving the boy for five minutes is accurate if 130 adults haven’t been able to find him in two days.
There are cases where lack of perfection in Asian culture generates abuse. My son was paired with an Asian girl for a duet at a piano recital. Any bobble is met with meanness on the mother’s part. When the day of the recital came, and they played their piece, both kids did well. But the first thing the girl did was run to her mom and apologize for a ‘mistake’. My wife and I agreed that if our son’s piano teacher wanted to pair him in a duet, but won’t be with that girl. I even toyed with the idea of an anonymous tip to CPS, but I had no real proof if anything physical, just a mean angry mom and verbal nonsense.

Sounds likely. In a strict family, the father would have told the child to wait there and the child would have likely obeyed. You are correct that actual abuse is highly sanctioned socially but corporal punishment, and family business work demands, both “declared” abusive here are quite common in Far East cultures, even among the wealthy. I think we are the ones in the wrong for making too few demands on our youth. However I’ve seen practices that I disagree with also.
More proof that corporal punishment really is the perfect discipline.
Parents need to learn the art of ass-whuppin. Deserting a kid is not discipline.

I got that threat, plus on occasion they would pack a suitcase with my clothes, get me in the car and tell me they were driving me to the orphanage.

Japan isn’t a typical East Asian culture. I don’t believe in corporal punishment but I do travel there all the time and at least in public most parents are more doting than the Americans or Hispanics in this country. Particularly with the record-low number of babies are being born in the country annually. As we speak there is a huge push by the Japanese legislature to modernize their child welfare laws. It is a huge step in the right direction.
You didn’t see this lady, and how creepy she was. Poor kid had to endure that.
