TORRINGTON — A video of a woman who was verbally assaulted while breastfeeding her baby in a Target store in Torrington is going viral.

Jessie Maher, who lives in Canton, posted the video Monday morning after she says she was “verbally assaulted by an old man in Target for breastfeeding my baby.” Maher filmed the entire incident.

Yep. Hard to reconcile:

1. I can breast feed my baby in public and how dare you object!
2. How DARE you watch me breast feed my baby!

As far as I’m concerned, if she’s in Target and needs to feed the baby, she can go out to her car, sit down with it, and feed it all she wants.

If her kids wanted lunch, would it be appropriate for her to sit down in the middle of an aisle, whip out some peanut butter and bread and milk and have a meal?

Women should attempt to be discreet and most are. Babies need to be fed when they are hungry regardless of where you are at that moment. Sometimes a private place just can’t be found. I can’t imagine bothering with bottles when out and about-nursing is so convenient.

On the other hand, I’ve known some La Leche League moms who seem to be drawing attention to the fact that they are nursing their baby...right now...in public...not attempting to cover an exposed breast. Even after nursing six of my own babies, I can be uncomfortable in the presence of such immodesty.

“That pig should cover up. IT’s the law not to walk around topless...a reason why we wear bra’s/shirts. Just because you have a kid sucking on it, doesn’t gives you the right to display your nakedness to kids, parents, mothers, families, men, toddlers, etc. It’s inconsiderate and embarrassing to people. Exhibitionist PIGS. Cover up ...it’s the law.”

And that’s where these FR threads usually go.

Dresden and circumcision discussions produce a similar outcome.

I like your idea of the option of a private place. But a bathroom seems a little... unappetizing.

Whenever I nursed my baby at a public eatery, I usually could find a corner booth where I was facing the back wall. Clean, calm, private, relaxing and I could order snacks. Never had the slightest problem.

I think she was not trying to attract the attention of men. You ought not to have said anything.

Just as natural as peeing.

I don’t have a problem with it either. When I see it happen, I make a concerted effort to not stare. I think that’s the gentlemanly approach.

After all, I can’t see what’s so provocative about it anyway. There’s nothing sexual about a baby breastfeeding.

True, a nursing mother should keep reasonably covered up, and it’s not that hard to do. Usually the baby’s head blocks the view -— unless the baby is one of those on-again off-again types. And a little “blankie” helps.

But listen: I don’t think it’s right to call the woman a pig. It violates our common code of respect. There are other ways to make your point.

Where do you draw the line. Changing diapers in public ok with you?

“Cover up ...it’s the law.”

Actually it’s not the law. Breastfeeding in public is covered in CT law. Says right in the article.

Now, for the frosted side of my reply. You’re too angry and should prolly get help.

Not hard to reconcile at all. Here’s the social code: she exercises reasonable discretion and does not call attention to herself. You exercise reasonable discretion and do not call attention to her.

My little sons both understood this by the time they could comprehend a simple version of the English language.

A few years ago, I sat beside a good looking woman in an airport who was breast feeding her baby. I asked her if I could watch as there is nothing more precious than a new born suckling their mother...she treated me as if I was a pervert and quickly moved away. Did I do something wrong?
Do you have a daughter? If so, ask her what she thinks.

Not to be compared to peering. For one thing pee is a waste product, whereas milk is a food product. For another thing, peeing in public would end up in the wrong place: your seat or the floor. Milk would end up in the right place: in the happy baby.

“When the baby’s happy, everybody’s happy.”

The exhibitionist women are the ones who need help. For some reason they feel the need to go into public, expose themselves, embarrass people at the same time their kid is hungry. Like i said, they are inconsiderate and selfish. They are just pigs.

You’re ridiculous. How can you expect anyone to take you seriously? And do you rebuke the little teenagers and twenty-somethings, scantily-clad, running around in public show ok g more boob and cleavage then I do when I’m nursing my infant? I doubt it.
