I don't experience the unconditional love thing - I have two big Maine Coons, and while they're friendly, inquisitive and playful, they're also pretty tough and independent - my dog has learned from painful experience not to mess with them and I could swear they look a little annoyed when we return from a weekend trip and crowd back into "their" house. On the plus side, they don't need to be walked.
