And yet they negotiated. Into what exactly? Freedom is an illusion. It is also relativistic. At one point the settlers who became the first white Texans felt that they didn’t have enough freedom and migrated to the territory in order to gain more freedom. They didn’t achieve that relative freedom through battle. They did so by negotiating with Mexico for a mutually agreeable situation.
Years later the Mexicans changed the deal and it was at that point that the Texans raised arms against what they saw as tyranny.
Once they won their war against the Mexicans they were free - or at least freer than before, but the territory was huge and the residents lacked the resources to adequately protect themselves from the indians. so they sought the security of the US. They negotiated first for annexation, then to become a state.
