New Dwarf Planet Discovered Far Beyond Pluto's Orbit

Pluto isn't quite as lonely as scientists had thought.

Astronomers have discovered another dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of icy objects beyond Neptune. But this newfound world, dubbed 2015 RR245, is much more distant than Pluto, orbiting the sun once every 700 Earth years, scientists said. (Pluto completes one lap around the sun every 248 Earth years.)

"The icy worlds beyond Neptune trace how the giant planets formed and then moved out from the sun," discovery team member Michele Bannister, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said in a statement. "They let us piece together the history of our solar system."

...

The exact size of 2015 RR245 is not yet known, but the researchers think it's about 435 miles (700 kilometers) wide. Pluto is the largest resident of the Kuiper Belt, with a diameter of 1,474 miles (2,371 km).

The research team first spotted 2015 RR245 in February of this year, while poring over images that the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii took in September 2015 as part of the ongoing Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS).

"There it was on the screen — this dot of light moving so slowly that it had to be at least twice as far as Neptune from the sun," Bannister said.

I’m still not understanding much of this, but oh well. DP is leaving for camp with Vlad and Frank in half an hour; I’ll have to wrangle Frank into his uniform. Dressing oneself is not a small-boy skill, because they don’t care. Then I’ll run James over to church to leave for his campout. Tom could do it, but he can stay here and work on supper for those not going camping.

I have Pink Drink!

It Broke?!
What on earth had you done to it to upset it to that level?

Oh,
That could have some bearing on matters.
Few vehicles live that long ,’ere. The Salt and road conditions just kill them.

Looks as if the lower spring support that is welded to the strutpart broke/rusted off and allowed the spring to decompress. Which leaves it resting on the tire.

Pair of new struts on order, supposedly shipped today but UPS says they don’t have them yet.

Oops! Sorry to hear that. I just had to get an alternate accompanist because DP went to the Cub Scout campout. He might be back in time on Sunday, but everyone will feel better if we don’t have to worry about it.

And Elen will get Pay.

Basically, we’re talking about taking apart a Lego toy, sorting the pieces and building something different.

But I sure wish I’d had some Pink Drink to relax me yesterday, as I was pretty tense by the time I got done fiddling around.

And horror or horrors, I’m almost out of yogurt. *gasp* The rice pudding isn’t looking so great, either. I really need to go to Walmart, but I may get there sometime today, before the crowds start blocking the aisles.

Morning. I slept a little late, because I could. Nothing on the schedule (other than feeding pets) until 10.

Well, that darn Subaru. How dare it break down after only 188000 miles? *sheesh*

Did you find rides for on the epoples and equipment?

We had a brand new Chevy Monza, and Igor and the kids and I were just coming back from a trip someplace in St Louis to home in St Charles. We just turned off the freeway onto the road that led into the apartment complex and the right front strut broke. There we sat.

It was the last on a long list of things that was wrong with that car, and the company towed it, and fixed it. But Igor was boiling. What if it HAD broken on the freeway?

It was only in later years that I actually understood what the danger was, because I had learned much more about what makes a car. Then is when I heaved a large sigh of relief.

I’m hearing in my mind, “Chevy Monza, Two Plus Two.” Was that a thing, or have I gone ‘round the bend?

Probably, but I hated it after that, and wouldn’t drive it.

I sympathize.

Pat and Kathleen are up, no sign of anyone older. Pat fed the dragons.

A bit of a heart stopping thought , isn’t it.
All it needs is a tube between the spring cup and wishbone for the strut to live in. (Have been outside and looked. :) )

Thanks. I thought it existed, although I had no idea what it meant.
