An inmate fighting deputies at the Stanislaus County Jail on Friday morning broke free from them and slammed into third-floor elevator doors, which came off their tracks, allowing the man to fall 10 feet onto the top of the elevator car below, the sheriff said.
The incident happened about 6:50 a.m. The inmate, 36-year-old Manuel Gabriel Rico, was taken to a local hospital with several lacerations, and was examined for other injuries.
Rico was arrested Thursday morning by Riverbank Police Services on two misdemeanor warrants out of Alameda County for resisting arrest, Sheriff Adam Christianson said Friday. Hed been in custody about 24 hours because a day or two typically is how long it takes another agency to retrieve an inmate being held on a warrant.
Ricos cellmate told deputies there was something wrong with Rico and he wanted him out of the cell, Christianson said. Deputies noticed he was acting bizarrely, his speech pattern didnt make sense. They thought he was under the influence. We do our best to keep contraband out of the jail, but the harsh reality is it manages to get in.
Because Rico is a known gang member, he was classified and housed according to his criminal history, the sheriff said, and was handcuffed to be taken for medical examination. He initially was compliant with deputies, Christianson said, but once out of his cell, the fight was on.
The sheriff said he asked specifically if Rico hit the elevator doors while still locked in a struggle with either of the two deputies handling him on the third floor. Had that been the case, he would have expected a deputy also might have fallen.

Life....some get the car and some get the shaft.
When a convict is yelling get me my meds you might want to listen....Why?
Poor elevator.
Well he was not elevated by the experience.
These guys need to move the holding cells to a much higher floor.
My brother’s a deputy sheriff and works in that very jail. I just called him and fortunately, he wasn’t working that shift.

Modesto? Low rise town. Short fall.
I think the jail is 3 or 4 stories, actually drove by it this morning. True, one of our taller buildings.
Thank you for that. I love old movies.
Truth be told, he had it all planned. Better put an extra guard on his hospital door.
Sweet merciful Jesus, someone tell me the elevator car was okay!
He thought his time was up.

A lot of convicts are crazy and need their meds to keep from getting dangerous.
Then put them in a secure facility, called a ‘nut house’. I worked in three for many years. No real problems.
We can dig it...
