Our neighbor had a dog-- a little Yorkshire Terrier, so not particularly scary-- who intensely disliked me for reasons we couldn't explain. One day, while the dog was yapping himself into a frenzy, the neighbor just walked over and gave me a warm hug. From that day on, the dog thought I was okay.

We figured it was just a protective instinct-- men were a perceived threat to her, but not women.

That can happen sometimes with intact (not neutered/spayed) dogs. Males become very territorial over their female person, or females become very territorial over their male person.
