Our laptop recently died. The new one does not have a word processor and is a 64 bit memory. Question 1) is there a way around having to rent Word on the cloud? Question 2) Our old files are in 32 bit memory format. Can they be converted to 64 bit format?
There are boat loads of “Open Source” programs out there.
I have used “OpenOffice” in the past.
It can get a little sluggish at times, but I needed something that I could run from my USB drive.
It works.
And it’s free.
libreOffice.org or OpenOffice.org have M$ Office near clones that have all the attributes of Office.
If it has to be Microsoft, Amazon has it for $85. No cloud involved.
That said, Libre is pretty good though not perfect.
If you have a licensed copy, you should be able to install it on the new machine.
But I’d just go with libre or open office.

The document files are actually just byte streams and are the same on either 32 bit or 64 bit machines. The application executables and device drivers are affected by the address space only. I have used Windows Starter which is the free version of Word with ads and some limitations. It might still be available.
If so you can use that key to reinstall a version of your old software.
Try OpenOffice. It reads some Word formats.
