It’s a civil case, not a criminal one.

The original owner would probably win in court and force the return of the lizard, but it would not be cheap.

Yep, owner wins, may have to sue. Sad think is, he may not be able to sue in small claims, since they typically do not have jurisdiction to order return of a specific item, but rather only aware money damages. So, may have to go to a court of more general jurisdiction. He will win, as one cannot sell what he does not own, and title cannot pass, even to an innocent purchaser.
Case closed. Sorry for the long post, I knew it might drag on. LOL
