Was unaware that the relics of Sts. Peter and Paul were desecrated in Rome in 846 AD.
In junior high school history of western civilization, the whole story of Ferd and Isabella and Chris Columbus was a jolly tale well told, and Christianity was given the nod as a positive impetus contributing to the discovery of the New World, along with the desire for a new trade route to India.
But we were taught NOTHING about the Ottoman Empire, or the ongoing, brutal Muslim invasions of Europe, the desecrations of Christian holy places, and the slaughter.
My recollections of western civ requirements did touch on the Ottoman Empire, as a political entity, but any connection to Islam was glossed over.
This was a curious omission.
I only learned these things years later thru independent reading.
Edit: western civ requirements in college.
