Out here, the game wardens encourage relocating wildlife that is annoying-they will even show you how to use a live trap, and tell you what areas to release which species into-that isn’t done where you are?

I have heard that it has been done, with disastrous results, particularly with raccoons. And rodents carry several diseases (like plague, tularemia, hantavirus) and are carefully put down and disposed of.

Apparently that isn’t a concern any more out here-with rodent or other species-the wardens try to keep a healthy balance of prey animals and predators-mountain lion, coyote and wild hogs-we have strict leash laws with astronomical fines-because loose dogs run livestock, can form feral packs dangerous to humans and animals, etc-at the very least, they become fast food for mountain lions and coyotes-the idea is to keep those predators in the woods, eating their natural prey rather than attracting them with outdoor pets to pasture and garden where they might prey on livestock-so you don’t put out pet food-that attracts prey animals-and that-along with pets-attracts predators to come inside your fences.

As long as the predators have prey in the woods, they stay there and keep the proper natural balance, keeping deer herds from overpopulating, etc if not tempted by outdoor pets-it is a system that seems to work-there hasn’t been a rodent-borne disease problem since this wildlife program was started-more than 20 years...
