Coast to Coast radio show. Last night, discussed EMP threat. Bump for Trump
Coast to Coast Radio Show ^ | 8/9/2016 | (self)

I was listening to the talk radio show Coast to Coast AM, this morning.

There was a very good segment, on the threat of losing power, due to an EMP attack.

This is an issue, which George Noory, has been talking about, for almost two years.

I support him on this, and think this is an issue which Trump should take a position on.

America needs to protect our electrical grid.

All I am saying is, this seems to be an issue which our nation is not paying enough attention to.

Actually, that is not true. There is A LOT of work being done on micro-grids. These are independent 2MW grids that (if proven out) will be scattered around the country first at key locations then trickling down to consumer. The idea in mind is to heavily de-centralize the "grid"(s) in the event of natural disaster (A kickass solar flare could do some heavy damage if the Earth is in it's path). EMP itself is a tough one to debate. Some say StarFish damaged electronics as far as 600 miles away during that test, however that was yester-year and we were not so heavily "digitized" as we are today. EMP is line of site, but it's "Strength" is what is in question. Can a couple kilotons above America fry everything? Some say yes, some say no. I say prepare accordingly anyway as the bigger issue to me is the 20Trillion we are in debt, unfunded liabilities and the economy crashing. The FSA is more of a threat (IMO) than an EMP.

Newt is very knowledgable on the topic and has been interviewed several times on TV. Because Newt is close to Trump, I imagine the topic will come up eventually when discussing national security.

Also, Newt partnered with William Forstchen writing this book which all of us should read (IMO).

Pretty good novel. I went to high school with Bill Forstchen and even back then he was a brainiac. His knowledge of military and technology history is amazing. Writing style as a novelist is a little stilted but the storyline draws you in.

Gadsden1st :" EMP is similar to the Solar Flare in that they can vary in size and damage.
One can affect individual electronics such as car computers, etc.
Many opinions on just how bad this would be."

One of the Solar Flare incidents mentioned last night was the "Carrington Effect" which occur approximately every 150 years,
a solar flare which occurred in the 1850 which caused disruption of telegraph communication (the most advanced electrical system at that time),
causing wires to burn, and started numerous fires.

Noted last night is that the USA doesn't have a reserve of transformers, heavy duty wires to replace the system if it burned out from the "Carrington Effect".
Transformers are ordered 'as needed' on a case by case basis: most transformers are custom ordered from China, and take more than 30 days to be replaced.
An electric collapse might have a 'Domino Effect' on the electrical grid system, similar to what happened in the eastern US, when the NorthEast went dark for several days.
An electronic collapse would be more severe due to the sophistication of communication, power systems on the grid, transportation, and guidance devices.
Most power companies see protection from Solar Flares of the "Carrington Effect"/ EMPs as needless expense, and have resisted installing protective devices.
These power companies ignore the effect that it would have on National Defense, communications, and the general welfare of the nations citizenry,

Somewhat related, I lived on a sailboat for a while. Lightning strike took out my solar panels and radio. Both had blown input rectifying diodes. Leads from solar panel were melted. I replaced the solar panel printed circuit leads with hard wire, diodes, and everything else was fine.

“Definition of electronic’s please, the generator is an old AJAX that runs off it’s own power generation, the gas comes from an old well under it’s own pressure. Does the EMP effect electronics if they’re not running.”

It will fry circuit boards if the are not protected by a Faraday cage. The old cars and machinery with mechanical ignition would probably be OK.

Here is something on the Northeast power outage in 2003.

It affected our area for a while. I don’t honestly remeber how long cause we were always losing power for one reason or another.

"Does the EMP effect electronics if they’re not running.”"

Yes.

BTW, a microwave oven is a perfect Faraday Cage.

"A Faraday cage or Faraday shield is an enclosure used in order to block electric fields. It is formed by conductive material or by a mesh of such materials. Faraday cages are named after the English scientist Michael Faraday, who invented them in 1836.[1]"

How does the gas get to your generator?

Ah. Your own gas well. You will probably be reasonably OK.

For a while.

“BTW, a microwave oven is a perfect Faraday Cage”

A microwave oven is a terrible Faraday cage at all frequencies but 2.4Ghz.

Don’t believe me? Put a portable FM radio in your microwave. Tune it to your favorite local station. Close the door. The music will never stop.

Do not use a microwave oven. It’s a myth that keeps getting passed around.
